Bulgaria Tax Identification Number (TIN) & Bulstat / EIK Explained

If you’re setting up or running a company in Bulgaria, you’ll quickly meet several “numbers”. Here’s what the tax identification number (TIN) is and how it relates to the others.

The short version

In Bulgaria, the tax identification number is the same as your existing identifier — there is no separate standalone TIN:

• For a company: the TIN is the EIK (ЕИК) — the Unified Identification Code issued by the Commercial Register on registration. (Historically called the Bulstat number.) It’s a 9-digit number that serves as the company’s ID for tax, VAT and all official purposes.
• For a Bulgarian individual: the TIN is the EGN (ЕГН) — the 10-digit personal number.
• For a foreign individual without an EGN: a personal number of a foreigner (ЛНЧ) or a Bulstat number issued by the Registry Agency is used as the tax identifier.

EIK vs Bulstat vs VAT number

• EIK / Bulstat — the company’s core 9-digit ID. You get it automatically when the company is registered. Free.
• VAT number — only if the company is registered for VAT. It’s the EIK prefixed with BG (e.g. BG123456789). Not every company has one — see VAT registration in Bulgaria. You can validate any EU VAT number with our VAT tools / VIES.

How a non-resident gets a Bulgarian tax number

• Registering a company? The EIK is issued automatically by the Commercial Register when your EOOD/OOD is registered — no separate application. See company formation in Bulgaria.
• As an individual (e.g. a foreign shareholder who needs to be identified): a Bulstat / ЛНЧ number is obtained from the Registry Agency. We can arrange this as part of your setup.

Why it matters

You’ll need the EIK for invoices, the bank account, contracts, tax filings and VAT. It’s the single number that identifies your Bulgarian company everywhere — get it right from day one.
